NEWSLETTER – JUNE 2011
FALMOUTH FUN WEEK is nearly with us. Please find the full programme attached.
This year we are starting the week with our Peter Keeling Memorial Race. For those of you who never knew Peter, he was the owner of Cornish Crabbers when they first started building Shrimpers. He was a great man, he loved his Shrimper and encouraged all new owners to take part in racing. He was a true gentleman, not one of those pushy types and was always there to offer advice. This race is nearly always our best supported event of the year and is an ideal opportunity to race for the first time as there are no other classes of boat around, just Shrimpers!
I know this is meant to be a Fun Week and therefore not RACING ONLY but if you would like to know more about “Racing Rules” come to St Mawes Sailing Club at 1700hrs on Monday 27th where Bill Handly will give us a very informal brush-up on the rules,……..come along with your questions.
After Bill’s talk we will retire for our “Week’s Dinner” at the new refurbished Watch House at St Mawes, now under new management.
It will be £20 per head.
To Start
Tomato and buffalo mozzarella bruschetta
Cornish smoked cheddar and bacon tart, frisee and walnuts
Mains
Watch House fish and chips, crushed peas and tartare sauce
Roast corn-fed chicken, pan-fried gnocchi, greens and grain mustard
To finish
Vanilla poached nectarine and raspberry pavlova
Strawberry and lemon cheese cake
Please make your choice of meal on the Booking Form.
Also new this year will be a new venue for a Cream Tea. On Tuesday Jane Benge will lead us to Halwyn, a short walk from Combe Creek where we can anchor our boats.
New again, Wednesday is a half day, … Are we all getting OLDER.
On Thursday we will repeat our Fun and Games exercises which proved such fun last year. A group of non sailing wives fancy lunch at the Tresanton that day and no doubt they will marvel as they watch us “Sailing Backwards”. If you would like to join them please contact Jane Heslop (909) during the week, ladies only, sorry boys!
Following the success of John Benge and Julian Wofram’s “walk the course” event to encourage more racers at Mylor numbers are now picking up, Friday will be another opportunity to boost the numbers at their evening racing even further. Their NEW clubhouse is now open….looks spectacular.

NEW FOR 2011
SOA CARRICK ROADS
VILLAGE REGATTA SERIES
AS SUGGESTED AT OUR AGM, INORDER TO ENCOURAGE MORE OWNERS TO TAKE PART IN VILLAGE REGATTAS, WE HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE THE VILLAGES REGATTAS INTO A SERIES. THE SOA WILL AWARD A TROPHY TO THE WINNNER.
For those of you who have never taken part in a Village Regatta before, they are great fun, and much more laidback than FALMOUTH WEEK. Going ashore afterwards is highly recommended as the teas are great.
HOW DO YOU ENTER……. The best way is to go to the PoFSA Website http://www.pofsa.co.uk/index.php/?page=Regattas
Download a Common Entry Form
Then click on the Regatta on the chart and the start time, entry fees etc will come up.
Fill in your entry form, put it in a plastic bag together with your entry fee and hand it in to the late entry boat at the Regatta. This boat will often be a small rib which will come alongside if you signal it. Hand over the plastic bag and they will hand you the sailing instructions. Some Regattas will also publish these on the website but not all.
After the race look for other SHRIMPER participants, either raft up or pick up a mooring/anchor and (with luck!) you will be picked up and taken into tea.
Derek Holman will keep a record of your positions for each event. Many of our owners live “out of port” and we have therefore decided to have three discards so ideally it would be great if you could take part in at least four Regattas if you want to be in a good chance for the trophy.
Taking part is the most important thing and it is for this reason your Committee will be awarding a SPECIAL PRIZE for the most improved owner. You could even win if you only take part in one race! As an experiment, NO SITTING OUT WILL BE ALLOWED in any 2011Village Regatta! This will hopefully encourage the less experienced racer who might have thought he was at a disadvantage not sitting out.
