Boating holiday, Guadiana River, Spain and Portugal.
Casa Guadiana – a beautiful, peaceful base from which to explore this rather special part of Southern Europe.
Casa Guadiana is on the Portuguese bank of the fabulous Guadiana River which forms the border between Portugal and Spain for some 50 miles between the regions of the Algarve and Alentejo on the Portuguese side and Andalucía on the Spanish bank. But this is the unknown side of the Algarve – very tranquil, beautifully unspoilt and uncluttered.
If you’re fed up with cold, wet, grey boating in British waters then messing about on the Guadiana River will remind you what it’s all about. Our beautiful house has its own private pontoon on the river and a sturdy sailing dinghy with outboard engine, 2 touring kayaks and a Canadian canoe are all included in the basic price. Swimming is a delight from about the beginning of May to mid-October and just being on the river is a tonic after the speed and stress of normal life.
Both up- and down-stream from Casa Guadiana there is lots to explore; you can just gently potter down to the twin villages of Alcoutim and Sanlúcar for lunch, you could plan a day trip round the tides up to the tributary river Vascao and the old mining village of Pomarao or even an energetic day’s kayaking from the beautiful old walled town of Mertola.
