The Peter Keeling Trophy Week in late June continues to grow as one of the best attended racing events in the Shrimper calendar. Our only disappointment was that we were as unsuccessful as that Shrimper Bonanza in Falmouth in flushing out a representative from Select Yachts who live just up the road. Some 39 locally moored boats got together for 6 races over 6 days. Rock Water Ski and Sailing Club hosted the event, organising the racing and providing various events culminating in a supper and prize giving. We had several races with gate starts which provided a challenge for both competitors and race officer! New sails, largely supplied by Jeckells influenced the order at both the front and back of the fleet some would claim but the fast boats went as fast as ever.

Sailing at Rock is from the tidal estuary of the Camel opposite Padstow. We race within the estuary at high tide which creates some very testing courses where local knowledge can be helpful but since the sand is always on the move you can never be sure. When the weather permits we also lay courses in the bay. This is open to the Atlantic swell but frequently is calm and makes for ideal racing. There are some 60 Shrimpers moored at Rock and Padstow. Many are owned by those who holiday here but we have a very strong following of those who live in the area. As a result we have very good numbers on the water and racing is keen and friendly! It is common for our main events to have 35 boats on the water, more..
Coastal cruising is of necessity limited to summer high pressure periods, our coastline is quite superb and there are many bays and sheltered headlands which accommodate a picnic and swin.St Ives is 35 miles which on spring tide can take 7 hours. Bude can be reached in 5 hours.
