The South Coast may seem to be dominated by large white tubs but the Shrimpers are there - sometimes racing in Poole or Chichester Harbours, or anchoring for lunch in the places that those with deep keels cannot go.

the Old Gaffers Association
"There's nothing 'naffer than a plastic gaffer", or so the song goes according to some die-hard members of the Old Gaffers Association. However, that is not the view of most O.G.A. members, as long time Association member Tom Cunliffe was at pains to tell me recently when I tracked him down to return his call. He was actually at the helm of Westernman en route across
Channel, but was anxious for me to get a clear message out to S.O.A. members. It is the love of sailing boats with traditional rig, such as gaff, which is the spirit of the O.G.A., not the hull fabric.
Tom told me that there are several O.G.A. events each summer on the South Coast, indeed nationally, where Shrimpers would be most welcome. So, how about it ? There is a 3 day event in Yarmouth in early June, where Shrimpers have always been represented, but it would be nice to see a bigger S.O.A. fleet.
The Shrimper racing fleet at Poole continues to grow in numbers and is now the biggest class in the harbour. To feed this insatiable appetite for speed, close-up views of lateral and cardinal marks, and an urge to shout loudly at people who ½ hour earlier were good friends, Parkstone Y.C. have slotted a Shrimper class into their Monday evening series. I offer a tip, however. Don't hang about on the start line; the 'XOD's are just 5 minutes behind.
